OVERVIEW

East Corrimal Boardriders or (ECB) was established in January 2006 by local surfer Michael Van Opstal. Now in its 4th year the aim of the club is to provide a group of surfers with the opportunity to compete in a friendly environment. We meet 12 times a year for pointscore competitions, social events and an annual presentation.

MEMBERSHIP

Membership fees are $40.00 for the year and are payable by the second pointscore at the latest. If the money is not received by this date then the surfer will not receive his or her points from the previous competitions. These fees cover the costs of insurance of the club (Surfing N.S.W), beach bookings (council), members t-shirts, trophies and prizes at the presentation.

AGE GROUPS

ECB provides competitions in age groups as defined by the governing body of surfing (SURFING AUSTRALIA) They are:

  • Under 14, Under 16, Under 18. Surfers must be under that age for the whole calendar year (i.e. if you turn 16 this year you will be in the under 18’s). Ensure you are in the correct age group.
  • Over 28’s, Over 35’s, Over 45’s. Surfers must be that age or older for the whole calendar year(i.e. if you turn 35 in this calender year you are still in the over 28 division).
  • Open men’s. This age group is open to surfers of any age. Some surfers may compete in two divisions but it is not encouraged as the days take longer with more members coming on board. This will be at my discretion as contest director
  • Womens. At this stage we would like to have two divisions  Open women's and Junior women's this will depend on at least 3 women for each round.
  • This year we will attempt to have a “pro junior division” for under 21’s

POINTSCORES

There are 12 pointscores drawn up this year with the expectation that we run at least 10( some events cancelled due to poor conditions). Each competitor receives points (as shown below) for surfing and judging at each pointscore. A progressive tally is kept over the year ( each surfers top 8 results will count in the end of year tallies ). It is the same for everybody so if you don’t like it “stiff” . People must have their name down by 7.15 a.m. with the first heat to start at 7.30 am sharp. If you cannot make it early contact me on 0402803385 the night before or morning of the comp from 6.a.m. it is not fair to other competitors when people arrive and enter their heat late so if you are late you miss out.
# 2 points for entering and judging at each pointscore
#Heats , 1st= 4 points, 2nd  = 3 points, 3rd  2 points
#Finals , 1st = 12, 2nd = 10, 3rd = 8, 4th = 6, 5th = 4, 6th = 2 points

SURFERS RESPONSIBILITIES

It is required that all people compete in a fair manor and respect  their fellow competitors, the public at the beach and the personnel that run each event. It is also required that all surfers judge two heats at each pointscore (this will be monitored by me). We run up to 20 heats at each pointscore and with 3 judges plus a head judge/spotter this equals 80 people total and with 40 odd people at each event it becomes mandatory to do two. If you are unsure what is required ask for help via the head judge. There is also a guide at the bottom of the judging sheets.

EVENTS

A. 30-10 INTERCLUB CHALLENGE
This event is held on the first weekend of May each year and involves 1.Ecb 2. Woonona 3.Sandon point 4.Scarborough 5.Wollongong. Each club fields a group of competitors in different age groups (see 30-10 entry). Ecb’s team will be picked by members of the committee considering current position and form. To qualify surfers must be financial members and have competed in at least two pointscores for the year.

JIM BEAM SURFTAG
We and approximately 55 clubs across Australia are lucky and thankfull to be supported by Jim Beam. They provide us with competition rashies, a $500 prize for the open winner and the chance to compete in the state Jim Beam surftag competition. 5 surfers compete in a one hour comp (against 3 other teams) with all surfers catching 3 waves each (each surfers second wave is a “power wave” and scores double) these scores are added together and the top two teams progress. Ecb has the following procedure for qualification/eligibility to enter this competition.

  • The clubs 1st , 2nd  and 3rd place getters from the preceding year qualify as 1,2 and 3 on the list
  • Surfers must be 18 or older (jim beam rule)
  • Surfers must be a current paid member of Ecb and have competed in at least 4 pointscore competitions in the previous year
  • The clubs committee (9 people min) then vote on the rest of the eligible people who would like to compete and a 10 man list is created. This list then becomes the source of competitors . Numbers 1 to 5 are the preferred team but as people are unavailable then numbers 6 to 10 get a chance to fill the gap.

TRIP AWAY
The club will be having an annual trip away as shown on calendar. This year Lake Tabourie (just south of Ulladulla) will be the venue. Anyone is welcome but under 18’s must have noted permission ( I know it sounds bad but thems the rules) and/or an appropriate chaperone. It is byo everything and at a  cost to yourself  but it should be good and I would like to see as many groms  as possible.

REGISTRATION AND JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT DAY

This year was our first at this but it will be the norm from now on. It will be held on the last Sunday in Janurary each year from 8.a.m till 11.a.m ( Followed by our first pointscore the following Sunday from 7.30 a.m). It is designed to let people enquire about and to join the club. Junior surfers of any age receive lessons and coaching from qualified people and are introduced to clubs activities. All previous members who are rejoining are requested to attend, sign forms, pay membership and assist junior development.

PRESENTATION

The clubs annual presentation will be held on Saturday the 29th of November. It is held from 6.30 p.m. at  Corrimal Leagues Club (current sponsor of Ecb). All members, their families and/or friends are invited and encouraged to attend. Trophies are awarded to the top 3 people in each division and also for clubman and junior clubman. Awards are also given for encouragement, help within club and to sponsors. Prizes, competitions, bands and finger food will be provided. Peoples kids are especially invited to attend.

SPONSORS

The club has greater costs than what we make from membership and our BBQ so it is necessary for us to have sponsorship. A Budget is set at the start of each year showing all costs to run, maintain and purchase new gear as required by the club. Sponsorship is sought each year and we have a range of sponsorship levels and the benefits sponsors receive for their money. If anyone knows of any potential sponsors pass our information onto them or their contact details onto Shane Hornby. There is a copy of our current sponsorship proposal on the web site and I also keep paper copies at each pointscore. We aim to target local businesses that we believe we can support in a manner that is satisfactory to them so that an ongoing relationship can be formed.

WEB SITE

The club now has an official website, www.eastyboardriders.com.au, is the location of all the clubs details including calendar of upcoming events, up to date news, photos of recent pointscores, links to sponsors and all other relevant information and contact details.
